Here is a comment I made to this other scientific blog post:
Well, maybe a silver lining: at the end of this (nine years followup, etc.) shouldn't we at least have a definitive answer about the amyloid hypothesis? Even though it seems fairly clear by all the research and trials done so far (e.g. Lilly and others continuing to have failed trials with no benefits for amyloid clearing therapies, aducanumab trial itself, etc.) that clearing amyloid doesn't have clinical benefit, the amyloid hypothesis nevertheless is still the dominant hypothesis and direction that time/money/resources are spent on, leaving not much for other approaches.
So maybe the FDA just decided that, heck, Aducanumab does seem to be the best amyloid clearing agent, so let's just really put the amyloid hypothesis to the test and determine its validity once and for all. Maybe this approval can be the catharsis needed to purge any further time/money/resources spent on the amyloid hypothesis. Let's beat this dead horse to death!!
